Basel is known in the world as a center of international banking and insurance. Its industry is related to chemicals, pharmaceutical and electrical equipment. It is the home of the Swiss Industries Fair, held annually, the nation's most important trade event. Co-mingled in the modern city are elements of tradition and medievalism. One example of the medievalism, or Gothic style architecture, is the cathedral, or Munster. The Munster overlooks the Rhine. It is not uncommon, from its terrace, to see a gigantic barge coming down the Rhine from the north, perhaps from Baden-Baden or Rotterdam. The cathedral, built of dark red sandstone, was all but destroyed by an earthquake in the fourteenth century. Inside is the tomb of Queen Anne, wife of Rudolph of Habsburg. Habsburg was the family name of the rulers or conquers of this area centuries ago. Also entombed there is Erasmus of Rotterdam. In front of the cathedral is Munsterplatz, a square known throughout Europe for its exquisite perfection of its proportions.
